sonic prostheses; spatial algorithms for post-human users, 2014

The installation was conceived to resemble a statistical bar graph when viewed from above. Each speaker plays the sound recordings of computer-usage from a group of users, such as typing, chatting, gaming…etc. These recordings were analyzed and quantified, based on a measurement determined by the artist, thereby creating an anti-graph, where the category measured will not be of instrumental use, but would be idiosyncratic and obsolete. Consequently, each user is profiled through their computer-usage, reduced to an indicator of data on a spatial graph, with only a mouth-piece projecting the sound of their time spent on the computer, disembodied and anonymous. The capitalist process in which all cognitive/social attributes are subsumed into the production circuit is made ostensible through the representation of each user as a pathetic and minimal Beckettian humanoid, constituting part of the larger graph, repeating through the mouth piece only the sounds of digital immersion and mediation.
